BEAR AUTO REPAIR

What That Puddle Under Your Car Might Be

Noticing a puddle underneath your car can immediately raise concerns. While some dripping is completely normal, other automotive fluids can indicate a leak that needs professional attention. The color, consistency and location of the puddle can provide clues about what’s happening.

Clear Water

A small puddle of clear water is usually nothing to worry about, especially after running your air conditioner. Condensation naturally drains from the A/C system and commonly appears underneath the passenger side of the vehicle.

Engine Oil

Engine oil typically appears brown to black and feels slick or greasy. You may find it beneath the front or center of the engine compartment. Small oil leaks can worsen over time, and low oil levels can eventually cause serious engine damage.

Coolant

Coolant may be green, orange, pink, yellow or another bright color depending on the type your vehicle uses. It often has a slightly sweet smell and may appear near the front of the vehicle. A coolant leak can eventually lead to overheating, so it should be inspected promptly.

Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid is commonly red or reddish-brown, although older fluid can become much darker. A leak may appear beneath the middle or front portion of the vehicle. Low transmission fluid can affect lubrication, cooling and shifting performance.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is typically clear to light yellow or brown as it ages. You might notice it near a wheel or underneath the brake system. Because losing brake fluid can compromise stopping ability, suspected brake fluid leaks require immediate attention.

Don’t Ignore an Unexplained Leak

Power steering fluid and other automotive fluids can also end up underneath your vehicle. Rather than relying on color alone, have an unexplained leak professionally diagnosed.
