Why Does Your Car Need an Oil Change?

This is a common question we hear all the time at Fox Run Auto. People come in for a scheduled oil change and wonder if they really need it. The car is running fine. There haven't been any noticeable issues with the engine. They want to know if the oil really needs to be changed and why?

How Often Do I Need an Oil Change?

These are good questions to ask your mechanic if you are curious about the oil change process. For most of us, it's just something we take care of every once in awhile because it's just what we are supposed to do. Your mechanic gives you a sticker with a recommended mileage for your next service, or they may schedule your next appointment well in advance based on your average mileage intervals. On average, most drivers get their oil changed twice a year.

That's usually around every 6,000 miles or so for the average modern car. Some advanced engine designs may only require an oil change every 10,000 miles. Some older cars with high mileage may want to get their oil changed every 3,000-5,000 miles. Those intervals can vary depending on the vehicle and other factors. However, periodic oil changes are still needed for most vehicles.

Reasons You Need Oil Changes

So, why do we need to change the engine oil and filter? Even if your engine is running fine right now, it needs fresh, clean oil to function properly. If the oil level is too low or the oil itself is old, dirty, thick or crusty, it will not provide the necessary lubrication to fast-moving engine parts. This means the components like the pistons won't move as freely. They can start to get stuck or you have metal rubbing on metal with high levels of friction. This is how engines become damaged, or can fail completely.

Preventative Maintenance

Oil changes are part of a smart "preventative maintenance" plan. The idea is to perform these vital tasks on a regularly scheduled basis to help avoid major problems from developing. Rather than waiting for something to go wrong and deal with a very expensive engine repair, you replace the oil and filter periodically to ensure that the engine is getting proper lubrication.

You can learn to change the oil yourself if you want to save some money, or you can work with a reliable mechanic, auto shop or dealership to keep your vehicle on a consistent maintenance schedule. Oil changes are part of a preventative maintenance plan that should also include brake serving, cooling system services, transmission services, fluid checks and other tasks to keep your car running its best—and yes, to help prevent much worse automotive problems from occurring!
