BEAR AUTO REPAIR

8 Questions to Ask Your Mechanic

If you are bringing your car to a new mechanic or auto repair shop, you want to make sure you and your car are in good hands. Never be afraid to ask some questions before handing your keys over. Here are some of the best questions to ask to make sure they are the best auto repair option for you:

1. What Are Your Credentials?

Ask about their credentials and certifications. For example, Fox Run Auto is an AAA-certified roadside assistance and auto repair service provider for the Mid-Atlantic region. Our automotive technicians are also ASE-certified with specialized accreditations in various aspects of auto repair.

2. How Much Does the Inspection Cost?

Some shops and dealerships will charge you a fee to have your vehicle inspected, even if you already know what the problem is. They may roll this fee into the overall repair cost if you proceed with recommended services.

3. Can I See Your Reviews?

This may not be a question you ask the mechanic directly. Do your own research online and look up reviews from past customers. There are plenty of places like Google and Yelp that should provide unbiased feedback.

4. Have You Worked on My Type of Vehicle Before?

It never hurts to ask this simple question, especially if the shop advertises itself in a certain type of vehicle (trucks vs. cars, foreign vs. domestic, etc.). Make sure they have some experience working with your vehicle's make and model.

5. What is Your Inspection Report and Estimate Process?

Understand exactly what to expect with the auto repair process, especially the upfront steps. Ask about their inspection process and what they will provide with the inspection report. Try to find someone who will provide you with a written report and detailed breakdown of cost estimates for recommended repairs. That's exactly what we do at Fox Run Auto!

6. How Long Will it Take?

A good mechanic should be able to provide you with a relatively accurate timeline for your initial inspection/estimate. Then, ask them how long any specific recommended repairs will take.

7. How Will You Keep Me Updated

If your repairs may take several days/weeks, ask about the update process. Figure out if and how they will contact you to keep you informed of what is going on. It can be very frustrating when you don't know what is happening.

8. What Are Your Warranties?

Always ask about warranty coverage on any parts and labor provided by the mechanic/shop. Some parts may have manufacturer warranties and the shop itself may offer additional coverage for certain services. Get all the details upfront to ensure peace of mind.

These are a few good questions you should ask your mechanic or automotive repair shop before you commit to any expensive repairs—or even minor maintenance services. Know as much as you can about them, their processes and their costs.
