6 Ways to Tell if Your Transmission is Slipping

One of the most common transmission problems that you can encounter is a slipping transmission. This means that it is not shifting smoothly from gear to gear or that it is not staying fully in gear as you drive. This can be the sign of internal damage or it may just mean you are due for a standard transmission service to replace the transmission fluid, filter and pan gasket.

As with any automotive problem, you will want to deal with it as soon as you can to hopefully avoid major repairs. The longer you put it off, the more likely the damage will compound and cost you even more to fix. That's why Fox Run Auto has put together this list of common "symptoms" to let you know that your transmission may be slipping:

1. Vehicle Feels Sluggish

If the car feels very sluggish or is not accelerating as quickly as usual, it could be a slipping transmission or some other sort of transmission issue that you will want to get checked out right away.

2. Clutch Isn't Working

If you drive a manual transmission vehicle and nothing happens when you press the clutch pedal, you may have a damaged clutch assembly or something wrong in the transmission system itself.

3. Loud Engine Revs

Related to #1 on this list, you may hear the engine rev loudly or see the RPM gauge go into the red when you press the gas pedal, yet the vehicle doesn't accelerate accordingly. This is a very common sign of a transmission problem.

4. Sudden Shifts into Neutral

It can happen where the vehicle suddenly shifts into neutral while you are driving. This means it's having a hard time staying in gear and is definitely worth getting looked at by a professional mechanic.

5. Noises and/or Vibrations

The unmistakable "grinding gears" sound is the most common noise you might hear to let you know there is a transmission issue (or that you are not shifting properly in a manual transmission vehicle). There may be other sounds like whining or significant vibrations that can be signs of transmission problems. Strange noises can come from any number of damaged automotive systems, though, including the suspension, brakes, exhaust, engine, cooling system, etc. That's why it's a good idea to bring it to a trusted auto shop like Fox Run Auto for a proper diagnostic review and inspection.

6. You Aren't Able to Shift Between Gears

If you are driving a manual transmission vehicle and it won't shift between certain gears (or is struggling to get into any gear), then you likely have a clutch or internal transmission problem. You may just need fresh transmission fluid.

These are some common signs that your transmission is slipping or that you have some other sort of problem with your transmission, clutch, torque converter or drivetrain system.
